Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat (fast):

On this day, after retiring from daily work, take bath, etc., and pray to God, O Keshav! For your happiness today, day and night, restraint and rule should be followed by me. If there is any disturbance through my sleeping senses or if food is already stuck in my teeth, O Purushottam! You forgive all these things. From the morning of Nirjala Ekadashi to the next day, if possible, keep a silent fast. One gets great virtue by observing Nigot fast without drinking water. On this day, empty pots, garna [water filter cloth], fan, pot cover, glass, mangoes, bananas, hail, and melons, should be donated according to the faith.

Story of Nirjala Ekadashi

Among Pandavas, Bhimsen was the highest physical strength. There was a fire named Bruk ( बृक) in his abdomen. Therefore, even after eating a large amount of food, his hunger was not satisfied. That is why he is also known as Brukodar (बृकोदर). He was born powerful, but after going to Naglok and drinking the juice of 10 Kunds, he got the strength of 10,000 Elephants, due to the effect of the juice, his digestive system and appetite increased. All Pandavas and their wife Draupadi used to fast on Ekadashi, but fasting was difficult for Bhima. Once, Bhima, who came to the place of Maharishi Vyas Pandavas, said to Maharishi Vyas, "Bhagwan, Yudhishthira, Arjun, Nakula, Sahadeva, Mother Kunti, Draupadi, all fast on Ekadashi, and I also ask to keep Ekadashi fast. But I, I cannot live without food. Therefore, by staying fast on 24 Ekadashis and saving me from suffering this sadhana, tell me such a fast, by which I do not have any special inconvenience and I can get the fruits of all of them too.

Maharishi Vyas knew that there is a fire called Brik ( बृक) in Bhima's stomach, so even after eating a large amount of food, his hunger is not satisfied. Maharishi Vyas told Bhima that they should keep the fast of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, he asked to make this fast waterless and told that due to its effect you will get the fruits of Ekadashi throughout the year. You should observe this fast for the rest of your life. Bhima observed a fast of Nirjala Ekadashi with great courage, as a result of which he became unconscious in the morning. Then the Pandavas removed Bhima's unconsciousness by giving Gangajal, Tulsi, Charanamrit, and Prasad, hence it is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi.
